Launch add hardware wizard command line

by admin on November 3, 2009

In Windows XP and Server 2003, we can launch ‘Add Hardware Wizard‘ from command line using the below command.

hdwwzd.cpl

This command can be also be used from Run window. Below is snapshot of this wizard.

Windows 7

The above command does not work in Windows 7. We can add new hardware by plugging in the device to the computer. Windows 7 will automatically try to install the drivers for it. If it could not find, you will be prompted to install it from a CD.
To install legacy hardware, you can open device management wizard, and then click on Action -> Add legacy hardware.

The above mentioned command is wrong. Does not start the required wizard.

Yes, in Widows 7, it does not work. Actually we do not need this. In XP, one has to manually install drivers after adding new hardware. Windows 7 does that automatically.
